Teaching the next generation about recycling and the circular economy to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

At school, kids are taught about different materials in science and why some things can or can’t be reused or recycled. In geography, they look at how people can impact the environment and the use of natural resources. Design and technology lessons often cover how products are made and what happens to them at the end of their life, which helps introduce ideas about waste and sustainability. On top of this, many schools run recycling schemes or similar projects, so recycling becomes something practical and familiar, rather than just a theory. Then you hope that, at home, kids see how recycling works from a household perspective.

Teaching the younger generation about recycling is a good starting point, but it is not enough on its own. To prepare young people for the challenges and opportunities of the future, education needs to broaden its focus to include the wider waste and circularity industry, why waste exists, how and when material is recycled or reused, and how innovation, skills and careers can transform waste into a valuable resource.

Recycling is often taught as a simple act in households. You separate paper, plastic, metal and food waste, place them in the correct bin, and feel you’ve done your part. While this is important, it can unintentionally hide the bigger picture. Children and young people rarely see what happens after the bin is collected, who handles the material or how decisions about waste affect the environment, the economy and wider society.

By teaching the full journey of materials from extraction and production to use, reuse, recycling and recovery, we help young people understand that waste is not just rubbish, but a resource that needs managing.

The concept of the circular economy provides a framework for this education. Circularity focuses on keeping materials in use for as long as possible, reducing waste, repairing products and regenerating natural systems. Introducing these ideas early encourages the development of thinking and problem-solving skills.

Crucially, teaching about waste and circularity also opens young people’s eyes to a huge range of career opportunities. Many still assume the sector is limited to bin collection or skip drivers and household waste recycling centre operators. In reality, it is a diverse and rapidly evolving industry employing engineers, scientists, planners, data analysts, designers, ecologists, logistics managers, policy specialists, communications professionals and business leaders.

There are roles in recycling plants, energy-from-waste facilities, anaerobic digestion sites, laboratories, government, architects and environmental consultancies, as well as in technology start-ups developing new processes and digital tracking systems.

Engaging with industry is key to bringing these careers to life. School visits to recycling or treatment facilities, guest speakers from the sector and work experience placements can all challenge outdated perceptions. Even simple case studies, such as how construction waste can be reused in new developments, can help younger people see real-world impact and purpose in these jobs.

Finally, teaching the next generation about waste and circularity is about empowerment. Young people are increasingly concerned about climate change, resource scarcity and environmental harm. Showing them how the waste and circular economy sectors contribute to climate solutions, local jobs and sustainable growth gives them pathways to turn those concerns into positive action. By expanding education beyond recycling alone, we can inspire a generation that not only sorts their waste but designs a better, more circular future.
